Vulnerable Sector Checks are a federally mandated standard set by the RCMP to determine if an applicant has a record suspension (formerly known as pardons) for a sexual offence. People who volunteer or have jobs where they are in a position of authority or trust of children or vulnerable persons will be asked to obtain a vulnerable sector check. The purpose of the vulnerable sector check is to protect children and vulnerable persons. Initially, the Vulnerable Sector check is a name-and-date-of-birth and gender-based background check. If there is a match found in the initial database, then the applicant is mandated to submit fingerprints to further validate their identity.

Vulnerable sector checks are conducted against a separate data bank that lists individuals residing in Canada who have been suspended for sexual offences only. Suspensions/pardons granted for all other criminal convictions will not be discovered in the process of a vulnerable sector check. The results of the vulnerable sector check will be sent directly to the requesting organization. The specific database used requires an Enhanced Criminal Record Check to be conducted. In British Columbia, the British Columbia Records Review Program is the authorized body for conducting these checks and only uses the local police or the RCMP to conduct them. Therefore, third-party agencies, like The Fingerprint Room Inc., cannot provide vulnerable sector checks.
