Applicants for Canadian visa or immigration are required to provide both biometrics and digital fingerprinting. While both involves fingerprints, the purpose and functionality differ greatly.
Biometrics for visitors and new immigrants to Canada are required to provide their photo and fingerprints for facial recognition. The results are kept by Canada’s immigration department. The collection of biometrics information is often by appointment at Service Canada locations, or visa application center for applicants outside of Canada.
Fingerprints for criminal record checks are digitized and transmitted to RCMP’s CCRTIS server for the purpose of conducting criminal record checks only. After the result is produced, RCMP will not retain any record of the fingerprints and personal information.
