Recently, the BC government has introduced Bill 26: The Name Amendment Act. The proposed Bill aims to prevent convicted criminals and individuals who have committed offences causing serious harm to others from legally changing their names. Examples of serious crimes includes murder, sexual assault, and sexual crimes against children. Individuals who are 18 or older and are convicted of a serious crime or found not guilty by reason of mental disorder and young offenders who are convicted of prescribed offences and sentenced as adults, are affected by this amendment. Before this new Bill is in effect, anyone can seek to have their name legally changed in BC and The Fingerprint Room Inc. can provide fingerprinting for legal name changes and send the results directly to Vital Statistics Agency in Victoria BC.
