Recently, the Government of Canada has announced on Feb. 23rd, 2023 that individuals applying for temporary residence (TR) within Canada must resume collecting biometrics for their application. This resumption comes after 2 years when Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced a temporary exemption policy because of COVID-19 pandemic closures.
The resumption of biometrics impacts all individuals applying for temporary residence, including the following applicant groups:
- Individuals applying for a work permit or study permit
- Individuals applying for a temporary resident permit
- Individuals applying for a visitor visa
- Individuals applying to extend their stay as a student, visitor, or worker
- Individuals applying to restore their status as a student, visitor, or worker
Why Biometrics?
Although fingerprinting is required for both biometrics and RCMP criminal record checks, they are two separate and distinct procedures. Biometrics are a collection of fingerprints and a photograph of the applicant to document the physical characteristics for specifically Immigration purposes. Whereas a RCMP background check only collects and uses fingerprints for criminal record check purposes.
