How to Obtain a Canadian Background Check inside of Canada?

Obtaining a certified RCMP Canadian background check within Canada is fast and easy. Your fingerprints will be taken by a certified fingerprinting live-scan device, sent electronically directly to the RCMP’s Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Services (CCRTIS) server in Ottawa. The fingerprints are submitted to the RCMP on the same day. Once RCMP has accepted your fingerprints, they will produce the criminal background check certificate and will ship to your preferred address.

What is a Canadian Background Check?

A Canadian background check, also known as a criminal record check, is a search on an individual to determine whether the person have been convicted of a criminal offense. There are two types of Canadian background checks: a name-based background check and a RCMP fingerprint-based background check.

A Canadian Name Based background check uses data from the Canadian Police Information Centre. The background check certificate is typically produced in 24 to 48 hours after all required documents are submitted. The result can be either Negative, or Incomplete. The former indicates that there is no existing criminal record associated with the name and date of birth used. If it is the latter, then the contrary is the case. A RCMP fingerprint-based background check is needed to follow up for further clarifications.

A RCMP fingerprint-based background check, is a more thorough investigation based on an individual’s fingerprint identification to search for any criminal offences in Canada. The individual’s fingerprints are digitized and transmitted to RCMP’s Canadian Criminal Real Time Identification Server (CCRTIS) in Ottawa where the check is conducted. If no criminal charges can be found based on the fingerprints provided, the check will yield a Negative result. However, if a criminal record is discovered, the check will come back with a Positive result as well as details of the criminal record found.

What Documents are Required for my Canadian Background Check?

Two pieces of valid, government-issued IDs in English are required (one must include a photo), such as:

  • Passport
  • Driver’s License
  • Citizenship Card/Certificate
  • Health Card

Any supporting documents such as a request letter from your employer or immigration center can be helpful. But they are not mandatory to have your application processed.

For fingerprint based Canadian background checks, the hardcopy of a complete set of the applicant’s fingerprints is needed.

For name based Canadian background checks, a completed consent form is needed. An electronic copy of the document will suffice.

What is the Processing Time for my Canadian Background Check?

For name and date of birth-based background checks, results are released within 24 to 48 hours. For RCMP fingerprints-based background checks, the average processing time is 5 to 10 business days. However, if a criminal record is found, it may take up to 120 business days for the results to come out.
