In October 2020, the RCMP officially updated the wording in the certificates issued under “Privacy Act” type background checks. Applicants applying for US immigration may be required to submit criminal background check under the Privacy Act. In these cases, the sub-type written on the certificate was “Privacy Act – Others (Provide Details)”.

However, since the October update, the original wording of “Privacy Act Request Type” has now changed to “Criminal Record Check to Personal Use – Other (Provide Detail)”. Please be reassured that although the wording on the certificate has changed, the criminal record check certificate is still a certified background check under the Privacy Act.
