Background check certificates/police certificates are often requested for most visa and immigration applications. For a Canadian RCMP criminal record check, the procedure for adults and minors are similar, but not without a few key differences.

Fingerprinting the applicant is required for RCMP to issue the criminal record check. This can be done for a minor as long as they are over 12 years of age. The result issued will be under the purpose “Personal Use” (formerly known as Privacy Act), with the exception for Canadian Citizenship applications (the result can be issued under Canadian citizenship). The result of the background check for a minor can only be returned to the applicant’s own personal address, no third party can receive it on their behalf.
