Unfortunately for some, discrepancy in their legal names through multiple IDs is a reality. For example, a name on driver’s license may not match the name on passport or a name on their citizenship card. Some may have a different name order on front and back of the citizenship card. Name shown on the citizenship card without the photo is considered the official legal name. However, to change the name shown in IDs in BC, it is required to provide a name change certificate.

Certificate of Change of Name acts as proof that your legal name has changed. The document is required at times when you would like to change the name shown on certain identity documents such as passport and BC driver’s license. If you were born in Canada, a legal change of name also changes the name on your birth certificate.
