Alberta Legal Name Change

If you are 18 years or older and live in Alberta, you may apply to have your first, middle, last name, or all parts of your name legally changed. You must apply through a registry agent and are required to obtain electronic fingerprints for the Name Change application if you are 12 years of age or older

Looking to change your legal name and need fingerprints taken for a name change application in Alberta?

Certificate of Change of Name acts as proof that your legal name has changed. The document is required at times when you would like to change the name shown on certain identity documents such as passport and driver’s license. If you were born in Canada, a legal change of name also changes the name on your birth certificate.

What to bring to your fingerprinting appointment?

1. Two pieces of government issued English IDs (one must include a photo)

2. Fingerprints will be scanned and submitted to the RCMP
